Is Doing It Yourself Really That Easy
With all the “How To” videos available today, many people either attempt to do things themselves they aren’t experienced at, or help a friend with a project they know little about.
Some jobs seem pretty simple and don’t look like they take a rocket scientist to do, but the reason you would want to hire a plumber rather than have your family member, neighbor or handyman do it, or even attempt to do it yourself, is that an experienced, licensed plumber knows just how to do it properly to avoid damages or even save your life.
A water heater is a great example. Even if they look the same on the outside, there are changes to water heaters on how they function which could also mean changes to how they are installed and vented. An improperly installed water heater can actually be fatal if carbon monoxide goes back into your home rather than out the vent.
Besides life threatening mistakes there are those that can cause extensive damage. An example is a customer we had who had a neighbor install her toilet. When they installed her toilet, they didn’t install it correctly. There are several things they could have done wrong, like loose water line connections, not getting it secure to the gasket on the floor, or the tank and bowl gasket not secured properly. This customer left town for 2 weeks only to come home to a totally damaged floor from the toilet leaking for two weeks. Now, the next problem is she has no recourse for the costs and has to pay for all the damages herself, which also includes mold removal.
Sometimes it just makes sense to hire a professional from the start.
